SSI The Netherlands 1975 – 2008
The developments with respect to sustainability in The Netherlands have been measured along the 24 indicators of the (redesigned) SSI. It appears that The Netherlands has made little progress on the way to a sustainable society, across the years 1975 - 2008. The overall score of the SSI grew by nearly 0.5 points to 6.26 in 2008. While income per capita grew by more than 500%, the increase of the SSI is a mere 8%. The considerable increase in wealth has not been used for a substantial increase of the level of sustainability. At this pace it will take more than 250 years to achieve full sustainability.

The SSI-2008, the two-yearly update of the SSI, has been launched.
Since the first publication of the SSI in 2006, now the first update is available: the SSI-2008. It presents the level of sustainability of 151 countries and shows progress over a period of two years. The good news is that the world has made a small step towards sustainability in this period. The world average SSI-score improved by 0.1 points to 5.7, on a scale of 0 to 10. However, the bad news is that with respect to issues which may be of decisive importance for this century like renewable energy and emission of greenhouse gases, the world is still in decline.
