Priorities

Each region and each country will have to set its own priorities to achieve progress towards a sustainable society. The results of the SSI-2008 can support the setting of such priorities. On a worldwide scale it is obvious that the direction of indicators that now are in decline, should be reversed urgently to avoid further deterioration. This is particularly important for:

  • Depletion of Resources (Waste Recycling)
  • Consumption of Renewable Energy
  • Emission of Greenhouse Gases
  • Ecological Footprint
  • Income Distribution

This doesn't alter the fact that actually all indicators need attention, in one region more than in another.

Beside this worldwide agenda, priorities have to be set separately for each region and country, each having its own particularities. Input can be retrieved from the datasheet .

Many programmes for improvement have been adopted. Some focus on specific topics, others aim to achieve a wide range of goals, like the Millennium Development Goals. The results of our study underline the urgency of implementing these programmes and to give them utmost support.
